Every Task You Need To Remember For A Confident + Smooth Move

A smooth move starts long before the moving truck arrives. Give yourself plenty of time to get organized and take care of the details that can easily become stressful when they're left until the last minute.
→ Organize & Plan Ahead
→ Set a moving budget
→ Declutter and donate, sell, or dispose of anything you don't want to bring with you
→ Create an inventory of important household items
→ Schedule professional movers or reserve a moving truck
→ Arrange childcare or time off work for moving day
→ Make plans for safely transporting pets, plants, and vehicles
→ Begin gathering boxes, packing materials, labels, and tape
My tip: Moving is the perfect opportunity to decide what you actually want in your new home. If you have great memories, but don't really want them in your next home, (I get it, sentimental items have emotional attachment). Take a picture, then donate it. The less you move, the easier unpacking will be and with the picture you will still have the memory without the heavy lift!
Before You Start Packing
There's nothing quite like getting the keys to your new home. But before you can settle in and make it yours, there's packing to do, addresses to change, utilities to transfer, and plenty of little details that are easy to overlook.
After more than 20 years of helping West Michigan families buy and sell their homes, I've learned that a little preparation can make moving day feel much more manageable.
I've put together this moving checklist to help you stay organized before, during, and after your move, so you can spend less time worrying about what you forgot and more time looking forward to being home.
Some things shouldn't end up packed away in a moving box. Gather important records and personal documents ahead of time and keep them somewhere safe and accessible throughout your move.
Make sure you have:
Medical and dental records
Current prescriptions and medication
School records and enrollment information
Insurance documents
Financial information
Identification and legal documents
Valuable or sentimental items
Keep these items with you rather than putting them on the moving truck.
Gather Your Important Records
As moving day gets closer, there are a few final things you'll want to take care of around your current home.
→ Dispose of hazardous or flammable materials properly
→ Defrost and clean your freezer
→ Clean out your refrigerator
→ Clean appliances you're leaving behind
→ Measure larger furniture to make sure it will fit in your new space
→ Confirm moving-day parking and access for your movers
→ Finish packing any rooms or closets you've been putting off
If you're selling your home, this is also a good time to gather appliance manuals, warranties, remotes, extra keys, and anything else the new homeowners may need.
Prepare Your Current Home
One of the easiest things to forget during a move is telling everyone where you're going.
Start updating your address and transferring services whenever possible before moving day. This can help prevent missed mail, billing issues, or interruptions once you're in your new home. Don't forget to notify the following:
Home & Utilities:
→ Gas, electric, and water providers
→ Internet and cable providers
→ Garbage and recycling services
→ Lawn or home maintenance services
Financial & Insurance
→ Banks and credit unions
→ Credit card and loan companies
→ Homeowners or renters insurance
→ Auto insurance
→ Health, dental, and life insurance providers
Personal & Professional
→ Employer
→ Doctors and dentists
→ Veterinarian
→ Attorney or accountant
→ Schools
→ Memberships and subscriptions
You'll also want to update your mailing address and any appropriate government records.
Update Your Address & Services
One of my favorite moving tips is to pack as if you'll be away from all your belongings for one night.
Even the most organized move can leave you searching through boxes at the end of a long day. Keep the things you'll need immediately in a suitcase or overnight bag that stays with you.
Pack:
→ A change of clothes and pajamas
→ Toiletries
→ Medications
→ Towels
→ Toilet paper
→ Phone chargers
→ Important documents
→ Pet essentials
→ A few snacks and bottles of water
→ Personal valuables
You'll thank yourself when you don't have to open six boxes just to find your toothbrush.
Pack a Moving-Day Bag
In addition to your overnight bag, pack one clearly labeled box with everything you'll want during your first few hours in your new home.
Consider including:
→ Cleaning supplies
→ Paper towels
→ Hand soap
→ Basic tools
→ Light bulbs
→ Paper plates, cups, and utensils
→ Coffee and snacks
→ Phone chargers
→ Remote controls
→ A few favorite toys or activities for the kids
Make sure this box travels to an easy-to-reach spot rather than getting buried at the back of the moving truck.
Create an "Open First" Box
There will be a lot happening at once, so focus on the details that matter most and keep this final checklist nearby.
Before Leaving Your Current Home
→ Be available when the movers arrive
→ Protect floors and carpeting
→ Keep children and pets somewhere safe
→ Make sure every box is clearly labeled
→ Complete a final cleaning
→ Remove all trash
→ Check closets, cabinets, drawers, the garage, basement, and attic
→ Leave appliance manuals and relevant receipts
→ Leave labeled keys and garage door openers
→ Turn off lights
→ Secure windows and doors
→ Complete one final walkthrough before leaving
Take your time with that last walkthrough. It's much easier to catch something while you're still there than after you've handed over the keys.
Once the boxes are inside and the moving truck pulls away, give yourself permission to settle in slowly. You don't need to have every room unpacked or every picture hung on the first day.
Start with the spaces you use most, get comfortable, and enjoy making your new home yours.
